Instrument Rating

Fly with confidence beyond visual limitations.

The Instrument Rating allows pilots to operate safely in low visibility and adverse weather conditions by relying solely on aircraft instruments. This rating significantly improves safety, precision, and professionalism.

Program Overview

The Instrument Rating (IR) allows pilots to fly safely in clouds, low visibility, and adverse weather conditions. This advanced training builds on Private Pilot skills, teaching you to rely on instruments for navigation and control. With an IR, you can file IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) flight plans, expand your flight opportunities, and increase safety and confidence in all conditions.

Eligibility & Prerequisites

To enroll in Instrument Rating training, students must meet these requirements:

  • Hold at least a current Private Pilot License (or be concurrently pursuing one)

  • Read, speak, write, and understand English

  • Hold a current FAA Medical Certificate

These prerequisites ensure that students are prepared for advanced instrument procedures and IFR flying.

Aircraft & Training Environment

Our Instrument Rating program focuses on skill mastery, precision, and real-world readiness:

  • One-on-one instruction tailored to your pace and experience

  • Integration of simulator and in-air training for efficient skill development

  • Scenario-based exercises covering navigation, approaches, holds, and instrument procedures

  • Flight training conducted in the Piper Cherokee 28-140 (160HP), IFR-equipped with Garmin 430W and ADS-B Out

  • Practical IFR experience at Oakland County International Airport (KPTK)

Students gain confidence flying in challenging conditions while building a strong foundation for advanced aviation ratings.

Timeline & Cost Expectations

  • Flight Requirements: Minimum 50 hours cross-country as pilot-in-command (10 hours in airplanes for IR)

  • Instrument Time: 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight, including 15 hours of instructor-led training
